Homeopathy after a concussion

After suffering a concussion, some patients exhibit acute and often chronic symptoms. Besides the headache and bumps and bruises, which can be assisted with Arnica, there are often cognitive problems, with focus, concentration and memory, and mental work usually bringing on headaches. Some people may develop symptoms of PTSD—post-traumatic stress disorder. Homeopathy can help.

Researchers J. Cassidy, B. Contrand, L. Holm, E. M. Laborey, Lagarde, F. Masson, R. Ribereau-Gayon, and L. Salmi observed patients—534 with mild traumatic brain injuries and 827 with non-head injuries—to determine if behavioral symptoms three months later were post-traumatic stress disorder. They found head injury was indeed a predictor of PTSD. Their findings—“Association of symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury with posttraumatic stress disorder vs. postconcussion syndrome”—were published in The Journal of the American Medical Association in September 2014.

If you or someone you love exhibit one or more of the following symptoms after a head injury, don’t ignore it. Seek help from your medical team.
• Feelings of anger or annoyance
• Anxiety
• Lasting confusion
• Depression
• Dizziness
• Headaches
• Memory loss
• Sleeplessness
• Excessive tiredness not due to poor sleep

A variety of treatments are available for trauma following a head injury. With PTSD, these treatments include behavior therapy, medication for specific symptoms like dizziness and headaches, anti-depressants, and the following homeopathic remedies:
Aconite for anxiety caused by fear
Arsenicum album for anxiety, irritability, sleeplessness
Aurum metallicum for depression and guilt about not fulfilling responsibilities
Natrum sulphuricum for depression, with headache, and respiratory problems
Sepia for apathy, overwhelm with responsibility, and wanting to isolate

After receiving treatment for a concussion or other head injury, be aware that PTSD may make an appearance and require treatment for a full recovery.
