How to treat a sprain with homeopathic medicine

compression bandage plus arnicaA sprain can be extremely painful. Prompt action is essential for a swift recovery.

Your mother or first aid training may have taught you to treat a sprain with RICE:
• Rest the injured limb or joint (no walking if ankle, no lifting if wrist, etc.)
• Ice for 20-minute time periods multiple times per day
• Compress with an elastic bandage
• Elevate

You can speed your recovery even more by adding a homeopathic remedy to diminish the swelling and bruising.

J. Hughes-Games advocates homeopathic arnica. In an article of the same name, published in April 2003 in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, Dr. Hughes-Games remarked on arnica’s ability to decrease bruising, swelling, and the need for painkillers.

Scientists, however, would like to see larger, more controlled trials and not rely on more than 30 years of success with new mothers in the author’s National Health Service practice. The conclusion: “it would be a tragedy if this effective, non-toxic and inexpensive medicine was denied patients because scientists cannot believe that it works.”

There is some research published, by surgeons, showing there is less swelling and bruising after surgery when the patients are treated with Arnica. These have been reported by
     • B Kotlus, D. Heringer, and R. Dryden in “Evaluation of homeopathic Arnica montana for ecchymosis after upper blepharoplasty: a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind study” published in the November-December 2010 issue of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
     • M. Kulick in “Clinical Research Study of SinEcch (Alpine Pharmaceuticals brand and dosage regimen of Homeopathic Arnica Montana) in the Reduction of Ecchymosis and Edema in Liposuction” reported at the Research and Innovative Technology Scientific Session of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery meeting, Las Vegas, April 29, 2002
     • B. Seeley, A. Denton, M. Ahn, and C. Maas in “Effect of homeopathic Arnica montana on bruising in face-lifts: results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial” published in the January-February 2006 archives of Facial Plastic Surgery
